  Preshow The Old Preshow: This room features a huge videoscreen, from where a five minute lasting video is played. Professor Nicholson introduces himself and explains the legend. He pays the old oak a visit the way it stands nowadays, and shows old footage of it as well. Explaining the old story, the legend goes that the oak was struck by lightning, and a branch broke of because of it and fell to the ground, causing a member of the count's family to die. After that, the count's journal was found, where he said he took the branch and took it to a secret vault, where he used it's pillars to encourage the lightning to strike the branch, hoping by doing so, the curse will be reversed. Next, the professor shows the visitors the octagon, and a large pillar in the center of the room. His fame was crowned by moving the bookshelf at the end of the octagon. Behind that bookshelf a secret entrance to a vault appeared. The professor enters, but before anything can be seen all video and audio is being cut off, all screens are snowy. A confused guide apologizes for the inconvenience and asking visitors to enter the next room. This room is the actual octagon. Meanwhile, the guide is trying to contact the professor. At the center of the room is the large pillar, and to the right is a big window with curtains, and everywhere is scaffolding and other decorations, that are covered with dusty sheets. Notable is, the device at the end of the room, that seems to be an electricitygenerator. Suddenly, all lights go out. Thunder and lightning can be seen and heared. The wind blows against the window and the curtains move. Even water can be felt! Horses can be heared far away. Then the generator starts to work, all kinds of things fall off, and the professor reports back in. He explains that he is in the secret vault behind the bookshelf, but it is not clear to him what is happening exactly. Something strange,anyhow, he invites visitors to come and have a look. The Current Preshow: The old preshow was used only for a few months. Professor Nicholson and his team are no longer in the new show. The waiting queue features tv screens now, from where a video plays. During this 15 minute show, you see footage of two interviews of real Alton Towers personnel. The screens are placed strategicly, so even while you are walking you will get and see the whole story. Les Davies speaks first, Alton Towers archivist. His research about the old oak tree forms the bases of the attraction. You see him walk through the woods towards the cursed oak. “It was clear something went drasticly wrong, no man would chain a huge oak like that”. Next, Damian Varney appears, who was on several tv documentries and leaded the restoration project of the towers. He explains how they discovered the brickstone corridor behind the bookshelf, and that no map indicated there was such a space. If you visited this attraction before, it is possible to see on the video's what is going to happen, take a close look at the smirged windows! The main video shows a reconstruction of events that lead up to the curse that was spelled by the old beggar woman, and a more clear explanation by the count as to why he chained the oaktree and the expiriments that followed involving the secret vault. The big screen inside the octagon has changed slightly too. The video that is shown is much shorter than before, and there is no water to be felt anymore, but instead there is the shape of an old woman spelling out the curse from the scaffolds. From the octagon visitors go inside the secret vault behind the bookshelf as before. |
